FOUNDED IN CONGLETON

A long time ago, Congleton had a problem. The town’s beloved bear, star of the shows and festivals, had died. The fairs just weren’t the same without it and people were worried the crowds and their money would stop coming.

So what did the townsfolk do? Legend has it they dipped into the money that was supposed to go towards buying a new Bible for the church and instead they bought a new bear.

The gamble paid off. The fairs carried on, the people were happy, and the town became known far and wide as Beartown, a name that has stuck for hundreds of years.
